With the Holidays approaching, the students in the Early Childhood Developmental Delay Classroom, ages 3 - 7 years of age, at Hillside Learning and Behavior Center (Previously the Allegan County Development Center) have experienced a great lesson in giving. They gathered 12 large boxes of food, snacks, hygiene items, reading materials, games and other items to send to soldiers in Iraq. Teacher Martha Adams has a nephew, Ryan Walter, who is currently serving as a medic to a marine unit stationed in Fallujah Iraq. Walter’s and his unit are serving their second tour of duty in Iraq and have just recently lost 3 soldiers.
“We initially began this adventure and learning experience as just one classroom,” shares Adams, “But soon the entire school, staff and student’s families jumped in to help resulting in an overwhelming response!”
“The school family hopes the boxes will help cheer the guys up and let them know that we are still thinking about them”, stated Robin Melvin, Hillside Center Principal. In addition to the boxes of needed personal items, a huge box of letters, notes, cards and pictures were sent as well so the soldiers could learn a little more about the Hillside Center Students and their fabulous school!
