Nick Westra, the director of the Allegan County Area Technical and Education Center announced today the formation of an education / business partnership with the JL Murphy School of Cosmetology of Allegan. Beginning immediately, high school students will be allowed to enroll in this traditionally post high school state certified Cosmetology training program to begin attending class next fall at the Tech Center. The program will offer the first 350 hours of academic training required by the state to be a licensed cosmetologist.
High School Students will be charged a motivational tuition of $600, per student, Westra said. For all students who successfully complete the first year of study, the full $600 tuition will be credited to the costs of the remaining one thousand one hundred fifty hours or practical training needed for state licensure, he added. The benefit to the Allegan area high school student and their family is enormous. Under the program, students gain high school credit and post secondary career readiness training at the same time. It is a huge “jump-start” on a cool career and the cost savings are truly significant. In addition, the JL Murphy director has awarded (10) ten, $1000, scholarships for the top ten students in each class. “There is better than a 50% chance of being awarded a scholarship under this agreement,” said Westra. “This opportunity is open to both high school and adult students,” continued Westra. Thinking of enrolling? Adult students should contact the Tech Center at 269.673.3121, and high school students should contact their school counselors.
