During the week of April 20th-24th the Business Management class of the Allegan County Area Technical and Education Center (ACATEC) held a Penny War for the Allegan County Imagination Library program in which all 16 programs participated. The winning class received a pizza party in exchange for their donations. The Business Management class took daily tallies of all the programs and posted each program’s standing. A program would earn 1 point for each penny donated. The program generated a huge amount of competition and money, because one team could “give” another team negative points. “This was accomplished”, explains Beth Johnston, ACATEC Business Management Instructor, “Because silver coins and paper dollars were considered “negative points” and if one team donated them, negative points were given to opposing programs, dropping them in the standings.
This “warring” escalated through the week with almost half of the donation coming in on Friday. The Business Management class decided to do the Penny War as its community service for Business Professionals of America. The proceeds, $450, from the Penny War were donated to the Allegan County Imagination Library Program, which currently is supplying free books to 1600 Allegan County children, from birth to age five. The Allegan County Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is a co-partnership of the Allegan Area Educational Service Agency (AAESA) and the Allegan County United Way. The program raises money and provides Allegan County children free, high-quality books every month until they reach the age of five. The books are selected by a nationwide panel of experts and are sent to each child through the mail. |
