Parents as Teachers: Parenting & Child Development from Birth to Age 5 PDF Print E-mail
  • A free, voluntary program provided by your local school district to any family with children from birth to age five.
  • A parent/school partnership that ensures that young children are prepared  to be successful in school.
  • A way to access child development information, assessment, and parenting resources and support.

Why Enroll in Parents as Teachers (PAT)?

As a parent, you are your child's first and most important teacher. You begin teaching your baby during your pregnancy through touch and your voice. From the start, you shape your child's future by providing a variety of experiences.

What happens when you enroll in Parents as Teachers?

  • Parents learn fun ways to help their baby learn in the comfort of their own home.
  • Friendly Parent Educators help parents create an environment for their child that leads to school readiness.

What assistance do PAT Families recieve?

  • Personal visits from a PAT certified Parent Educator, trained in the latest on child development, brain research and early learning. Your Parent Educator helps you understand what to expect as your child grows and offers ideas to stimulate learning and manage challenging behavior.
  • Playgroups that allow you to meet other parents and provide opportunities for your child to interact with other children. Playgroups also provide educational parent/child activities based on the theme of children's books that you take home.
  • Screenings, administered periodically by a Parent Educator, that assess your child's overall development.
  • Connections with community resources that link your family to services that you want that are beyond the scope of PAT.

A Program that Works!

In the first few years, children learn more and at a faster pace than at any other time in life.  National research shows that children who have PAT:

  • At age 3 are significantly more advanced in language, problem solving and other cognitive abilities than comparison children.
  • Score higher on kindergarten readiness tests and on standardized measures of achievement in early grades.

Parents in the PAT program:

  • Are more involved in their children's schooling.
  • Are more confident in their parenting role and read more to their children.

What Parents Have To Say . . .

"This program is great! It is helping me be the best mom I can be."

"I understand why my child acts as she does. I have a lot more patience than I would have had without the program."

"Our child is only two and we feel very prepared to help him be ready for school."
