Early Childhood Development Delay Program |
Focuses on development of children who manifest impairments in one or more areas of development equal to or greater than ½ of the expected development for chronological age, as measured by more than one developmental scale, which cannot be resolved by medical or nutritional intervention. |
Early On is a statewide, comprehensive, coordinated interagency system of early intervention services for infants and toddlers birth to age three with disabilities or delays and their families. Eligible children are infants and toddlers from birth to age three who need early intervention services because they are experiencing developmental delays and/or have a diagnosed physical or mental condition that has a high probability of resulting in developmental delay.
Families often become aware of Early On through state or local child find efforts. Child find, public awareness, and referral are required components of early intervention systems. Any family in Allegan concerned about the development or health of their child can access Early On by contacting the Early On of Allegan County at 1-269-673-2161. Families outside of the Allegan county can locate their local Early On agency by calling the Early On referral line at 1-800-EARLY ON. |

Hearing Impaired Programs |
The Allegan County Hearing Impaired Program is a total communication program that advocates a combination of the components of the oral and manual approaches. Speech, sign, speech reading, natural gestures, finger spelling, use of residual hearing, reading and writing are combined and geared to the specific language needs of the individual student with a hearing impairment. |
Occupational therapy uses therapeutic techniques to improve, develop or restore a child's neurodevelopment functions. This program is provided for infants and toddlers through Early On and for children three years and older through special education in a school setting. Services are provided free of charge for children that qualify. |
Physical therapy services in the school setting are directed toward assisting students with a physical disability to participate in an educational program. Screening, assessment, consultation with staff and parents, training for health care assistants, and direct therapy are all included. |
This group is composed of school speech-language pathologists who work with special needs children ages 0-26 years in Allegan County. Their role is to evaluate a communication impairment which might negatively impact a student’s life within the community or school setting. Beyond the evaluation, the speech pathologists design a therapy program and act as MET teacher members in the special education process. |
The goal is to assist in the education and safety of Allegan County’s visually impaired students. In this endeavor we provide a teacher consultant and an orientation and mobility specialist. We work to coordinate the needs of the student, parents and teaching staff to facilitate the learning processes the individual case requires to assist them to be as independent as possible when they become adults. |

Early Literacy Hint |
One more time... young children often go through a period of time when they want the same book each day. Continue to expose your child to other books but allow them to keep their favorite. |
