Virtual Academy of Allegan County

  • VAAC CLOSING ANNOUNCEMENT

When the pandemic hit in the Spring of 2020 it threw the 2020-21 school year into question. The Virtual Academy of Allegan County (VAAC) was created in order to allow families to have a consistent educational model, regardless of building quarantines or closures. Despite the success of the program (over 1,100 students served) the need for the VAAC program going forward has diminished. Therefore, by a unanimous decision of the superintendents of the partner school districts, VAAC will cease operations at the end of this school year.

“When we started this journey almost a year ago, our goals were fairly simple - to provide an alternative educational option for students and families to help them navigate the uncertainties of the pandemic,” said Frank Holes, Allegan Area ESA Director of Instructional Services.

“We always knew we were going to be a huge band-aid for a year, and that we would anticipate our student enrollment to drop significantly for year two. We still feel that there is a core group of families who want the virtual option. However, based on our survey of families, those who would like the virtual choice for next year is smaller than what we need to sustain the program financially.”

This decision does not impact the current year. The end of the school year will proceed as planned. Mr. Holes concluded, “As an organization, we cannot be prouder of the work that each of our teachers, supporting staff, and Ashley Leneway, our administrator, have put in to make VAAC a success for students and families.”

Families who have questions about their virtual options for the 2021-22 school year should contact their local school district.

The Virtual Academy of Allegan County (VAAC) is being designed in a collaborative effort among local, participating school districts to provide a 100% online educational option for students and families. It is important to note that this is vastly different from both a traditional in-person school experience and the spring 2020 emergency remote instruction. The VAAC provides online curriculum, interactive instruction and activities. There will be assessments, and students will earn actual grades and credits as part of staying connected to their local district. There are also required components of student participation and attendance as well as parental support and engagement.
