• Hillside Learning and Behavior Center Campuses

  • In service to its eight local districts, AAESA offers services and programs for students with significant disabilities in the areas of physical needs, cognitive/learning needs, sensory/communication needs and behavioral needs. Principal Amy Tomlinson oversees two Hillside campuses.

Hillside Learning Center (West Program at the Main Campus located in Allegan) provides programs to educate students who are physically and/or cognitively impaired. The classroom teachers, along with a nurse, speech therapists, occupational and physical therapists, aquatic instructor, music therapist, technology specialist and various specialized teacher consultants all join together to plan and provide a free and appropriate public education for each student.

Hillside Behavior Center (East Program at the Main Campus located in Allegan) provides programs to assist students who exhibit pervasive and persistent behaviors. These programs help the students better understand their behaviors, make more positive choices and return to their local school district successfully.

The Young Adult Campus (located in Otsego) emphasizes community based instruction with a focus on vocational skills and functional academics. This program is designed to strengthen the individual’s ability to safely navigate their communities and to fully participate in family activities such as eating out, shopping and attending community activities.  A focus is also placed on vocational skills and exploration as well as functional academics.  The goal is to connect students and families with adult service agencies to facilitate their transition to the adult community.

In addition, transition services are provided for students 16 years or older. Coordination of career readiness activities and independent goal planning occurs annually. Vocational Transition Programs offered are Small Business Operations, Career Readiness, and Work Site Based Learning.
