Many Careers, Many Pathways

spark success logo Many families say the primary goal for their child is a happy, meaningful life. An essential part of that is a career their children like, which is not only financially rewarding but also suits their interests and ideally sparks their passion. Spark Success helps support that goal.

The mission of Spark Success is to raise awareness of the many career pathways available to students in Allegan County and across West Michigan. Only by working together as families, educators, employers, and legislators can we ensure our children have abundant opportunities to succeed in whatever career path they choose.

Spark Success was designed by four West Michigan intermediate school districts (Allegan, Kent, Muskegon, and Ottawa) in collaboration with the Doug & Maria DeVos Foundation, to raise awareness of the multiple paths to successful careers and happy lives.

Economists estimate that by 2026 West Michigan will gain more than 100,000 new high-wage, high-demand jobs. Most of those jobs do not require a bachelor’s degree but need some type of industry-recognized credential. Additionally, there are approximately 24,000 vacant jobs monthly in West Michigan - more openings than qualified people to fill them. Spark Success is designed to raise awareness of the types of jobs available as well as the many paths that lead to a successful career.

West Michigan is well-positioned to help prepare students to pursue various career options. The region is home to more than a dozen colleges and universities, over ten trade schools geared toward specific occupations, nine tech centers at area intermediate school districts, more than 200 accredited certificate programs, and hundreds of K-12 schools (public, private, and parochial).
