Otsego Rotary Stepping Up for Summer Reading

students selecting booksThe Otsego Rotary is giving back with a gift of a lifetime - the gift of knowledge through a book giveaway for several lucky students. The Rotary received a grant to help with summer literacy; they matched that grant and committed $3,000 to purchase books for students across our district.

"We want to thank our Rotary for their generosity and adding to our literacy and summer reading efforts! It’s critical that all students have access to books over the summer and helping to build each child’s at-home library is an incredible gift,” says Gina Watson, Otsego Elementary Literacy Coach.

This program is called “Step Up to Summer Reading” and several students, in grades K-3, got to “shop” for seven books from a wide selection of new books. “It was wonderful to see the smiles on the kids' faces as they got to shop for new books,'' Watson adds.

Rotary members handed out the shopping bags, helped students find good-fit books and were able to spend some time reading with them, as well. This effort is in addition to other efforts ensuring all students have access to books over the summer.
