Summer Letter from the Superintendent
Many of our staff, students, and families have had the opportunity to take some well-deserved vacation time recently. I’ve heard stories of camping trips, boating on various lakes, and family time spent traveling. It is good to recharge our batteries in preparation for the 2018-19 school year.
Last year the AAESA staff participated in a book study around The Leader Who Had No Title. The valuable lessons learned from reading and discussing the material continue to inform our shared work together. Having our entire AAESA family literally “on the same page” built camaraderie and gave us a shared vocabulary as we continue to build a strong and positive culture. The exercises we did around the book at Opening Day and our Celebration of Learning, as well as at various department and building meetings, helped show that everyone, regardless of title or job description, can be a leader.
As we go into the 2018-2019 school year, we are focusing on the students and communities we serve by keeping our three core values top of mind:
Education: Increase learning outcomes for all by providing and supporting effective relevant programming.
Leadership: Intentionally lead, using evidence-based practices for continuous improvement.
Service: Serve the needs of our community through quality resources, collaboration and compassion.
As we continue to live out these values and as we achieve our individual, school and district goals, there will be multiple professional development opportunities for all staff. These activities include armed-intruder training, proper responses to bullying and harassment, and reviewing our continuous improvement standards. In addition, we will continue our proactive efforts such as; Global Compliance Network training modules, bi-annual notices of our policies prohibiting unlawful harassment, links on the web site for reporting discrimination, and promoting civility in the workplace.
It is a privilege to work with staff teams committed to our vision of transforming lives through education, leadership, and service. Together, we ensure that each student and staff member is respected and valued.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns regarding policies, procedures, or practices please contact me. Feedback from our community is welcome and vitally important for creating a learning culture committed to respect and civility.
Thank you for allowing us to serve the students, families and communities of Allegan County.
Yours in Education,
Allegan Area ESA Superintendent
