Children gather around Daniel Tiger inside library

Plainwell, MI – The Ransom District Library was full of smiles, laughter, and learning on Friday, May 2, as more than 300 people—including approximately 180 children—attended the 3rd annual “Let’s Talk About Books, Balls, Blocks, and Bounce” Kid’s Day Event. The event welcomed families from across Allegan County to celebrate early literacy, learning, and child development.

One of the biggest highlights of the day was a visit from Daniel Tiger, beloved PBS character from WGVU Public Media, who helped bring the message of early literacy to life. Children enjoyed photo ops, Daniel Tiger waffles, face painting, bubble play, and time in the bounce house—all while being supported by a community of caring partners.

More than 21 Allegan County agencies and organizations were on site, offering valuable information, free giveaways, developmental screenings, and fun activities for families. In a heartwarming tribute to Fred Rogers, the beloved children’s television host known for his iconic red cardigan sweaters and gentle advocacy for early learning, all event volunteers wore red cardigans. The gesture served as a visible reminder of the importance of kindness, connection, and supporting young children during their early years.

This event, designed to help prepare children ages 0-5 for preschool and kindergarten, was a true testament to the power of community collaboration.

“When local organizations come together in support of our littlest learners, the long-term impact benefits families, schools, and our entire county,” said Rebecca Huberty, Great Start Collaborative Supervisor at Allegan Area ESA. “Events like this demonstrate the powerful and lasting effects of community involvement in preparing children for a bright future.”
