Each year, the Outstanding People for Education Awards shine a spotlight on individuals who go above and beyond to make a positive impact in Allegan County’s public schools. From dedicated educators and support staff to volunteers and administrators, these honorees exemplify excellence in education and a commitment to student success.

For 2025, eight local school districts and the Allegan Area ESA selected three recipients to receive this special recognition. The awards, sponsored by the Allegan County School Board Association, were celebrated at a banquet hosted by Allegan Conference Center at Allegan High School on May 28.

Andrea Jackson – Early Childhood Consultant

Andrea Jackson is a quiet yet powerful force behind some of the most impactful inclusion work happening in our schools. She brings not only expertise, but deep empathy—supporting educators, families, and students with complex needs. Andrea’s work has helped expand access to inclusive early childhood and general education programs, and she’s always the first to step in and support when challenges arise. Through her leadership, calm presence, and deep belief in every child’s potential, Andrea has inspired real, lasting change. She’s not just shaping programs—she’s reshaping what’s possible for students and staff across our service area.

Cherie Owens – Adaptive Physical Education Teacher

Cherie is the heart of Hillside’s Adaptive Physical Education program, and her positive energy is felt the moment she walks into the building. She goes above and beyond for her students and teammates, building relationships that make each student feel seen, supported, and capable. Cherie’s genuine joy in her work is contagious—she reminds all of us why we do what we do. With her can-do attitude, unwavering kindness, and commitment to student growth, Cherie is a bright light for both the Hillside community and Allegan Area ESA.

Stella Swindell – Building Custodian

Stella, a member of the custodial team at the Tech Center, has quietly become one of the most impactful mentors for students in the Employability Skills class. Though it’s not in her job description, she’s spent the past three years working one-on-one with special education students—teaching real-world skills with incredible patience, kindness, and care. Stella has created meaningful learning experiences that build confidence and independence, and she’s become a trusted role model in the process. Her work reminds us all that education happens everywhere—and that small, consistent acts of compassion can change a life.

Penny Bishop – Special Education Teacher, West Ward Elementary

Penny Bishop was selected as an Outstanding Person for Education for Allegan Public Schools in recognition of her extraordinary career as a special education teacher. Since joining APS in 1991, Penny has made a lasting difference in the lives of countless students and families. Known for her calm presence, gentle encouragement, and effective teaching strategies, Penny has helped students gain not only academic skills but also confidence and a love for learning. Her classroom is a place where every student feels supported and celebrated—whether through personalized instruction, fun and engaging lessons, or her beloved classroom store. Families deeply appreciate Penny’s willingness to communicate, explain, and walk alongside them throughout their child’s educational journey. As she prepares to retire, Penny’s warmth, dedication, and impact will continue to be felt throughout the district. APS is better because of her, and she leaves with the admiration and gratitude of the entire community.

Mindi Smith – Teacher, Little Tigers Learning Center

Mindi Smith was selected as an Outstanding Person for Education for Allegan Public Schools because of her extraordinary commitment to children and student athletes across the district. Whether nurturing toddlers as a daycare teacher or lifting spirits as President of the Allegan Sports Boosters, Mindi brings warmth, energy, and heart to everything she does. Families describe her as a trusted caregiver, creative activity leader, and tireless advocate who forms lasting connections with students of all ages. Through her leadership with the Boosters, she champions athletics behind the scenes—organizing fundraisers, planning special events, and ensuring teams have the uniforms, equipment, and support they need. But what truly sets Mindi apart is the love she shows every student. Her presence at games, her hugs in hard moments, and her relentless encouragement mean that every athlete knows they have someone in their corner. At APS, Mindi isn’t just a supporter—she’s family.

Erika Zimmer – First Grade Teacher, West Ward Elementary

Erika Zimmer was selected as an Outstanding Person for Education for Allegan Public Schools for her dedication to her students, colleagues, and school community. As a first-grade teacher, Erika is known for creating a warm, welcoming environment where all students feel safe, seen, and valued. She celebrates positive behavior, encourages curiosity, and works tirelessly to ensure every child feels a sense of belonging and success. Parents appreciate her cheerful communication, attentiveness, and unwavering commitment to their child’s growth. Beyond the classroom, Erika has led a number of school-wide initiatives—such as STEM Night, Reading Night, and engaging field trips—that enrich the learning experience for all students. Her peers describe her as a mentor, a steady source of encouragement, and a go-to support in both professional and personal moments. Erika’s joyful presence, collaborative spirit, and genuine commitment to helping every student thrive makes her an invaluable part of the APS community.

Julie Cossey – Fennville Elementary School Administrative Assistant

Julie Cossey is the heart and soul of Fennville Elementary School, with her dedication, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to the smooth operation of the school, making her an indispensable part of the Fennville community. With her warm smile and steady presence, she ensures that students, staff, and families feel supported, valued, and cared for every day. Julie’s role goes far beyond managing schedules and answering phone calls; she is the glue that holds the many moving parts of the school together. Whether comforting a nervous parent, assisting a student in need, or juggling multiple responsibilities with grace and efficiency, she handles it all with a positive attitude and genuine care for those around her. Her compassion shines in everyday moments, such as helping a child who has lost a tooth, celebrating student achievements, or offering reassurance during hectic times. While her tireless efforts often go unnoticed, they are essential to the school’s success. Julie is always prepared, patient, and ready to support everyone in the Fennville Elementary community. David McEntyre – Fennville Alternative High School Teacher

David McEntyre, affectionately known as "Mr. Mac" to his students, is a steady force, mentor, and comic relief at Fennville Alternative High School. His dedication to education spans across the district, where he has empowered students and staff to reach their goals with integrity, perseverance, and a great sense of humor. In the classroom, he creates an environment where students feel respected, supported, and at ease. His calm strength and adaptability help him tackle any challenge, while his genuine mentorship guides students out of their comfort zones and toward adulthood. Whether sharing wisdom from his life experiences or offering practical advice, his conversations leave a lasting impact. His commitment to students extends beyond academics, ensuring they feel seen, heard, and capable of achieving success. Growing up in a low-income household with six siblings, David understands the challenges many of his students face, and as the first in his family to attend college, he exemplifies perseverance and resilience. He listens with compassion but encourages students to overcome obstacles and take the first step toward success. Outside the classroom, Mr. Mac advocates for equity and justice, supporting public education, fair wages, affordable healthcare, and a functioning democracy. For his unwavering dedication, his mentorship, and his ability to uplift those around him, David McEntyre is truly an outstanding educator. His impact is felt in every student he encourages, every colleague he supports, and every life he changes.

Jaime Onken – Fennville Middle School ESL Teacher

Jaime Onken is a dedicated ESL teacher at Fennville Middle School, providing invaluable support to both students and staff. Her support for both students and staff extends far beyond the classroom, making her a pillar of the school community. As a mentor to both students and colleagues, she actively collaborates with fellow educators, offering guidance, brainstorming strategies, and implementing new ideas to enhance student learning. One of her many contributions includes co-developing a silent reading program that encourages deeper engagement with choice reading books through structured note-taking—an initiative that has already shown positive results. In addition to teaching, she assists with scheduling, summer school, classroom support, and mentoring new educators. With years of experience as an elementary teacher before transitioning to middle school, she brings a wealth of knowledge and passion to her work, often tutoring on her own time, chaperoning extracurricular activities, supporting sports programs, filling in as an administrator when needed, and maintaining strong communication with families. Her unwavering dedication to education, her students, and her colleagues makes her an indispensable part of Fennville Middle School, fostering a positive and nurturing environment where students can succeed, and her impact is felt by everyone who has the privilege of working with her.

Barb Null – Special Education Teacher

Barb Null is a true force in education—a dedicated, passionate, and inspiring individual who has gone above and beyond at every level. Barb brings discipline, heart, and resilience to her work. Her passion for teaching is unmatched, and she gives countless hours, always eager to lend a hand wherever it’s needed. Barb’s commitment is personal. She drives an hour each way just to support one student—yet her impact reaches so many more. No student in need ever goes unnoticed by Barb. She is also a powerful mentor to new educators, guiding them with experience, encouragement, and joy. Always up for a challenge—and always with a smile—Barb is a master learner, a gifted teacher, and a beloved member of our community. Michael Westra - Coach

Michael Westra is more than just a coach—he’s a mentor, motivator, and a source of lasting inspiration. Through his dedication to his students and his passion for running, he helps others not only achieve their goals but also believe in themselves along the way. His encouragement and support have made a deep impact, helping students grow stronger—physically and mentally. One student shared that Mr. Westra helped them decide to stay committed to running, a decision that will stick with them forever. He’s known for caring deeply, offering guidance in all areas, and cheering on every runner, no matter their pace. A talented runner himself, Mr. Westra brings out the best in others with positivity, consistency, and heart. His impact extends far beyond the track, and we’re lucky to have him leading the way.

Victoria Willey - Before & After School Coordinator

Victoria is a highly valued coworker and an essential part of our team. Her unwavering dedication and willingness to support others—often stepping in outside of her normal work hours—make her a standout among our staff. Victoria consistently brings a calm, confident presence to every situation, forming quick connections with students, especially those who present the biggest challenges. She has a special gift for building meaningful, trusting relationships with students, and her daily efforts have earned her their respect in ways that truly matter. Whether offering a helping hand to a colleague or showing up for a student who needs her most, Victoria exemplifies what it means to lead with heart, empathy, and strength. Kaitlyn Dudek - Physical Education and Health Teacher

Kaitlyn joined our staff at Hopkins High School in the fall of 2023, and from her very first day, she has brought with her a passion and dedication that have inspired all of those around her. For the past two years, Kaitlyn has not only excelled as a Physical Education and Health teacher but also as a mentor and coach for the students of Hopkins. Her commitment to the students and athletes goes above and beyond what is expected, and her positive influence can be felt throughout the entire school.

One of the most admirable qualities that Kaitlyn possesses is the trust that she has earned from both her peers and students. She is a trusted adult who students can confide in and seek guidance from, and her colleagues value her collaborative spirit.

What truly sets Kaitlyn apart from others is her ability to create a welcoming and inclusive classroom environment. She goes out of her way to ensure that every student feels heard, valued, and respected. She encourages open dialogue and fosters a sense of community within the classroom that is truly special.

Kaitlyn’s positive impact on our students and staff has been and will continue to be valued. We are incredibly grateful to have her as part of our Hopkins Public Schools community.

Deb Tew - Secretary

For the past 25 years, Mrs. Tew (as referred to by the students) has been a fixture in the Hopkins High School Office. Deb possesses all the qualities of an excellent staff member. She has been that calm, caring, motherly voice in the office for so long--calming fears, lending a listening ear, or just supporting in any way she can. In fact, in a way, she's almost too good at this... Some days, she would struggle to get any work done at times because she is such a trusted, listening confidant to all staff and students, and is visited by them frequently!

Throughout her career, Deb has made positive connections with thousands of students, always with a smile on her face. She is a great example of what it means to be “student-centered”, treating every person with respect, patience, and empathy.

Deb, your positive attitude and willingness to go above and beyond in all that you do have made you an invaluable member of our team. Thank you for your years of service to Hopkins Public Schools and your dedication to our students and staff. We are truly grateful for everything you have done.

Samantha Legg - Hopkins Elementary Teacher

Sam is a 5th-grade teacher at Hopkins Elementary. She joined the Hopkins staff in August of 2015, and I can proudly say that I was charged with the task of hiring her. She is honest, understanding, and the reason to believe that there are amazing teachers in this world. Hands down, she is doing what she is supposed to be doing in life.

Every day, Sam greets her students with warmth, respect, and genuine concern. In her classroom, she meets each of her students where they are and celebrates their individual successes as if they were her own children. You can feel the compassion that she has for her students from the moment you walk through her classroom door.

Ms. Legg is an incredible educator, mentor, and support system for the kids and families at Hopkins Elementary. She's truly a gem that has impacted our lives in ways we will never forget. Sarah Engelmann – Teacher – ECSE & Level 1

Being a Special Education teacher requires immense patience, compassion, and a deep understanding of individual needs. Sarah Engelmann exemplifies all of these qualities and more. Known for her unwavering dedication, Sarah brings her whole heart to the classroom each day. She takes time to understand what each student needs and builds strong, nurturing relationships, treating every child as if they were her own.

One parent shared, “It is my son’s favorite part of the day when he gets to go to her room. She is a shining example of what this award means.” Sarah’s work goes beyond the classroom; she pours her soul into creating an environment where all students feel safe, valued, and empowered to succeed. Martin Public Schools is truly fortunate to have Sarah on the team.

Amber Lenhart – Teacher – 1st Grade

First grade teacher Amber Lenhart is praised for creating a classroom that blends structure with joy, where students feel encouraged and supported. Known for her fast, open communication with families and her consistently warm demeanor, Amber has built strong, trusting relationships with both students and parents.

“She’s always smiling and so great with each student,” a parent shared. “My son loves going to school because he loves having her as a teacher.”

Amber implements reward systems that help guide positive behavior, and she responds to challenges quickly and effectively. She communicates openly with families and works as a true partner in her students' education. The gratitude from families whose children have been in her care is overwhelming: “Thank you for being a great teacher to both our boys.”

Noah Miller – Teacher – Band & Choir

In just over three years, music educator Noah Miller has transformed Martin’s music program from a small, struggling group into a dynamic, thriving band and choir. Through dedication, creativity, and an ability to connect with students on a meaningful level, Miller has created a culture where students feel inspired and supported.

Parents speak of the spark he ignites in students—how their children went from “going through the motions” to feeling passionate and proud about music. One parent recalled how Miller challenged their daughter to grow by suggesting a change in instruments. She was determined to prove him wrong—and she did, earning a “Most Improved” award in the process.

Miller’s influence goes far beyond notes and rhythms. He instills discipline, leadership, resilience, and respect. From honoring a fallen student with a powerful symbolic gesture at a concert to rallying the community under Friday night lights, his impact is deeply felt. “He is a difference maker,” one parent said. “He’s the kind of teacher that changes lives.”

Under his leadership, the band program has more than doubled in size, performed at college events, traveled to competitions, and created treasured memories for students. As one nomination noted, “His greatest achievement lies in the lasting positive influence on students’ lives.”

Otsego Public Schools

Dee Basse – Art Teacher

Dee has been a light for students and staff. She’s described as inspiring and someone who, when you’re around her, instantly changes your mood and you want to do better. She had a huge heart for everyone! Her instructional engagement is captivating… her belief in students radiates through everything she does. She calls all her students “artists” which sends the message that we are all capable of being artists and is a huge confidence boost. Dee has also volunteered her time and talents to two staff events - both were paint-alongs. One was to invite staff to create art alongside her art club students and the other for our Mental Health Awareness Initiative. To further quote one of her nominations: “She empowers others in a way that is specific to each person, she cares to get to know and makes you feel seen and heard.”

Jen Evans - Elementary Teacher, Dix Street Elementary

One of Jen’s nominations began with “Jen Evans is the teacher I wish I had growing up.” She supports each student in their own way… rises to the occasion by building relationships with them, loving them, and teaching them in a way that works best for them. She understands the importance of championing children on their journey. I quote “She’s a skilled master at coming alongside a child and coaching them through advocating for themselves and their needs.” One student shared “Mrs. Evans always makes sure we feel safe and respected, all of us, even if we struggle or have a hard time. She’s the best teacher and makes going to school fun.” In addition, she’s a leader among her colleagues not only by being a mentor and someone others lean on for advice, ideas and encouragement, but is always asking how she can get better.

Kristin VanWyk – Elementary Teacher, Dix Street Elementary

Kristin made an incredible impact in particular with one family and their daughter who has some medical needs. They praise Kristin for going above and beyond to ensure this student doesn’t fall behind and doesn’t miss out on the fun of kindergarten while making sure she knows she’s thinking of her when she has to miss school. To quote her nomination: “Kristin is so much more than just a kindergarten teacher. She is an excellent advocate, an emotionally safe person, someone my daughter can look up to, a staff member that exemplifies includes and a teacher that goes above and beyond to not only set her students up for academic success but also build a love for being school.”

Plainwell Community Schools

Sarah Boven – ELL Teacher and ESL Coordinator

Sarah Boven has been a dedicated member of Plainwell Community Schools since 2001, taking on various roles throughout her tenure. Upon graduating from Western Michigan University, she began her journey at PHS as a French teacher. Shortly thereafter, she expanded her role by teaching Spanish, as well as leading event planning and world cultures classes. Her impactful contribution to the community has been significant, especially in advancing the English Language program. During her time assisting the language department at Plainwell Middle School, she initiated the development of the EL program. By 2023, she transitioned to a full-time role as an ELL teacher and ESL coordinator for the district. In this capacity, Sarah offers essential English Language development and support to high school students.

Sarah's influence on the Plainwell community is widely recognized. Although many contribute to making Plainwell a more welcoming environment for English Language Learners, Sarah stands out for her unwavering commitment to integrating foreign exchange students, refugees from Bethany Christian Services, as well as other English learners.

Sarah is known for inspiring those around her to discover their unique ways to connect with and motivate students. She leads by example, both inside and outside the classroom. Through various initiatives, Sarah guides the Trojans in expanding their understanding of global languages through after-school clubs and programs; including leading the French Club for several years and in 2021 launching the Multicultural Club. With the support of a PHS colleague and a dedicated group of students, this club continues to grow each year, offering cultural activities and experiences that benefit both the Plainwell community and beyond.

As a proud mother of two PCS children, Sarah's nurturing instinct extends far beyond her family. Her compassion for her students is evident, as she supports them with housing, childcare and employment opportunities, all while helping them navigate the complexities of young adulthood.

Elizabeth Gallagher – Marketing & Communications

Elizabeth Gallagher joined Plainwell Community Schools in 2019, where she oversees the district’s Marketing and Communications. Throughout the last five years, she has taken immense pride in representing Plainwell Community Schools, highlighting all that is exceptional about PCS. Tasked with building a brand, she channeled her passion for design and creativity to craft a new narrative for the “Trojan’s story.” From capturing moments through the camera lens to promoting upcoming events/programs, to sharing the latest Trojan news, her role is filled with an endless amount of Plainwell Pride!

Elizabeth prioritizes supporting every administrator and director to the fullest extent of her capabilities. Whether through an email, a phone call, or even a text on the weekend, she consistently responds with caring attention. As for the district emails, reminder texts or early-morning snow day calls, it’s Elizabeth that is behind those communications. She is always willing to pause any task to assist with communications or projects that best support the district.

Acknowledging the hectic schedules of administrators, she proactively seeks ways to highlight the school’s achievements, showcasing all the wonderful successes happening in our school buildings every day. You will often see her with a camera in hand, capturing the next social media post or gathering stories for an upcoming School Matters publication.

With her own two children enrolled in the district, Elizabeth greatly values connecting and building relationships with students, staff and families. She approaches her responsibilities with the utmost dedication, always prioritizing the district’s needs. Her work and dedication reflect her pride in providing the very best for our district, and she feels honored to play a part in making PCS the special place it is.

Jenny Kidder – Plainwell Middle School ELA & Spanish Teacher

Fresh out of college in 2008, Jenny Kidder began her teaching career after her first-ever interview at Plainwell Middle School. She quickly earned a reputation as a teacher who fosters strong connections with both students and staff. Over her 17 years at PCS, she has consistently taught 8th-grade English Language Arts and Spanish. Her incredible demeanor with students, has allowed her to build a classroom atmosphere of mutual respect. Jenny firmly believes that every child can learn, regardless of labels, background or previous experiences. She cherishes the opportunity to contribute to a positive classroom atmosphere and considers it a privilege to be a part of her students' educational journey.

Jenny is also recognized as a leader among her colleagues at Plainwell Middle School. She is committed to not only enhancing her own teaching skills but also to elevating those of her peers. Many of her colleagues have thrived under her guidance, as she is always ready to go above and beyond to ensure that other teachers in her department succeed.

Throughout her time at PCS, Jenny has also served on the school leadership team and for many years was ELA department chair. In her time as department chair, she increased the rigor in the academic curriculum, while developing a strong cohesive team. She did so by showing empathy while staying true to her core beliefs regarding student learning.

Over the past five years, Jenny has been one of the PBIS coaches at the Middle School. She played a key role in reintroducing PBIS to the district and has been a passionate advocate for the program, leading it to receive statewide recognition and accolades. Her efforts as a coach have been pivotal in revising the school’s behavior management system, fostering unity among the staff and positively influencing student behavior.

Wayland Union Schools

Karri Bailey - Principal, Steeby Elementary

Karri Bailey has been a staff member at Wayland Union Schools for almost 17 years. This school year, she took on the role of Principal at Steeby Elementary. She has changed the culture within the building by focusing on empathy, compassion, integrity and respect. From day one, she has demonstrated an outstanding ability to listen to and understand the needs of both staff and parents, fostering a strong sense of collaboration and trust within the school community. Through her thoughtful and inclusive approach, Karri quickly became a respected leader, guiding the school with vision and purpose. Her belief in the potential of every student is clear in her actions as she relentlessly works to create opportunities that break down any barriers that may hinder a student's success. With her “all means all” approach, she challenges traditional thinking and dismantles the limitations historically placed on students and staff members. Her commitment to creating a positive, supportive environment ensures that everyone feels valued and heard. Her leadership has had a profound impact on the success of Steeby Elementary, making Karri Bailey a truly deserving candidate for this recognition.

Jamie Berens - Clerical Aide, Dorr Elementary

Jamie Berens has been a beloved staff member of Dorr Elementary serving as a clerical aide since 2017. Known for her creativity and warmth, she is constantly looking for new ways to connect with students and their families. Last school year, Jamie launched the Snow Day Challenge, which encourages students to participate in a meaningful challenge, such as writing their teacher a kind note when school is closed due to inclement weather. By inviting families to share their participation on social media, she helped maintain a strong sense of community and fun, no matter the weather. Jamie is the first face families see when they arrive at school each day, she is always striving to build positive relationships. You can often find Jamie starting her day outside, dancing and singing with students as they step off the bus, setting a joyful tone for the entire building. Her positive energy is contagious, and she has become a cherished presence among staff and families alike, making her truly deserving of this recognition.

Deb Wagner - Kitchen Manager, Wayland Union High School

Deb Wagner, a proud Wayland Union Schools alumni, has been a vital employee in our district for the past 27 years. As the current kitchen manager at the high school, Deb brings passion, precision, and heart to every aspect of her work. Each day, she leads her team in preparing restaurant-quality meals for over 800 students, ensuring that both breakfast and lunch are not only nutritious, but made with care. Always eager to innovate, Deb was instrumental in launching the Global Eats program - an exciting culinary journey that introduces students to the cuisine from a new country each month. Through this program, she broadens the students’ palates and fosters a deeper appreciation for cultures around the world. Beyond the kitchen, Deb is equally committed to supporting student growth. She works with our level two high school students by involving them in kitchen tasks, such as stocking coolers and cleaning, offering them meaningful job training experiences. Deb Wagner’s dedication and creativity will leave a lasting impact on our school community. We are grateful for her years of service and thrilled to recognize her with this well-earned honor.
